Man at Bus Stop

by Rick Brentlinger
(Pace, FL, USA)

Burdened with experience,
Like the wandering Jew;
Bowed beneath a load of care,
Nothing left to do.

Lies alone unblinking,
Staring into space;
Lines of pain and sorrow
Etched into his face.

Careworn by the years of time
Light dulled in the eye;
Shuffles toward a waiting bus,
Heaves a lonely sigh.

Youth a distant memory,
Bitter is the song;
Lives now only in the past,
-Memories linger long.

Waiting for a letter,
Listening for a phone;
Falls asleep all misty eyed,
Falls asleep alone.
