Praying Hands
by Peter Paul Reubens, 1577-1640

I asked the Lord for courage,
He gave me only fear;
But in my hour of deepest dread
I felt His presence near.

I asked the Lord for patience,
He sent me trials sore;
But as I learned to wait on Him
My patience increased more.

I asked for strength to bear the load,
Instead great weakness found;
Yet in the absence of my power
I saw His strength abound.

I find there is a lesson here,
That every saint should know;
That Jesus all-sufficient is
For every need below.

Reubens painted the praying hands around AD 1600. Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
